Scammed in the UK? What to do right now

Call 159, report the fraud, and claim reimbursement — most APP scam victims are now entitled to their money back.

Help guide·Last reviewed 8 Nov 2026

UK rules now give most victims of bank-transfer scams the right to reimbursement. Acting quickly still matters.

In the first hour

  1. Call 159 — the Stop Scams UK number connects you securely to your bank. Or call the number on your card.
  2. Tell the bank it’s a scam and ask them to stop the payment and contact the receiving bank.
  3. Forward scam texts to 7726 (free) so networks can block them.
  4. Change passwords for email and online banking.

Report it

  • England, Wales and Northern Ireland: report to Action Fraud online or on 0300 123 2040.
  • Scotland: call Police Scotland on 101.
  • Scam adverts: report them on the platform and to the Advertising Standards Authority.

Getting your money back

If you were tricked into sending a Faster Payment or CHAPS transfer, your bank must usually reimburse you up to £85,000 unless you were grossly negligent. Claim within 13 months of the last payment. If the bank refuses or doesn’t respond within the deadline, complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service — it’s free.

Protect yourself next

  • Register with Cifas Protective Registration if your identity was stolen.
  • Check your credit file with Experian, Equifax and TransUnion.
  • Be wary of anyone who contacts you offering to recover your money.
